After seeing that the latest book in the series has just been released and it has been over a year since I have read the books I thought it would be a good idea to re-read them so that the story is fresh in my mind ready for the newest instalment.
We are introduced to a 15 year old boy called John Smith who is in the middle of moving from Florida to Ohio. The thing is John is not an ordinary 15 year, he is in fact an alien that comes from the planet Lorien and is on the run from another group of aliens called Mogadorins who are wanting to kill him. 10 years ago 9 children and 9 adults are escaped Lorien, just before Mogadorins destroyed them like they did with the rest of the planet. the closest living planet to Lorien is Earth so that is where they decided to go for safety. Another important thing about people who come to Lorien is that some of them have got powers, these people are called Garde and the people without powers are called Cepan. So while on Earth, John is going to be slowly developing powers. Within about 4 months 3 of his powers are shown, these are Lumen (Allows him to light up his palms and makes him immune to heat/fire), telekinesis (moving things with his mind) and being able to talk to animals. During the 4 months in Ohio john has managed to get himself a girlfriend and a best friend, to make sure that he is safe he is not to be telling anyone who he really is. Well as you could probably guess there are situations which come through meaning he has to tell Sarah (Girlfriend) and Sam (Best Friend) who he really is. Both times he tell them it is because he has just saved their lives and he had no choice but to explain what he had done. John is number 4 of the children who made it to earth, this may not sound important but before the children left the planet, one of the elders of the planet put a charm on them that they could not be killed out of order, for example you cant kill 5 unless 1,2,3 and 4 are all dead. Any pain that was intended on 5 would be go to the person who is hurting them. Unfortunaley for john 1,2 and 3 have all been killed and as he is number 4 he is no longer safe from harm as if the Mogadorins find him then he could be killed, thing become even worse as if the children find each other even once then the charm no longer works and every one can be harmed even 9. So when 6 shows up out of the blue then they know that the charm has been broken. The Mogadorins come to the school, but they don’t just bring the scouts they bring everyone including 3 beasts which are 40ft plus tall all for the 2 aliens, Henry (Johns Cepan) Sarah, Mark and Sam.
So expect for mythology Sci-Fi is my favourite genre of books to read, so you wouldn’t be surprised to find out that I loved this book as it has everything I love in Sci-fi. Aliens, powers, action, love story. So all that was needed was for this book to be written well and I am very happy to tell you that it was and I loved every second of it.
I have read this book before but that was when I was 14 so I had forgotten quite a bit about, I know this because I was generally surprised with some sections of the book and it felt like I was reading the book again for the first time.
The way in which the surrounding areas where described was amazing, I felt like I was actually there instead of sitting at home in my bedroom. Everything from the chipped paints on the outside of the walls, to the dust covered furniture it was all described amazingly. The school was written about pretty well as I could imagine exactly what it looked like, a long school building with 2 floors with bars on the windows on the second floor to stop people from jumping out of them. The author did an amazing job here.
The book even seemed to progress really quickly as well, I don’t know if that was because I couldn’t put the book down or that it was actually a short book. But it didn’t seem to take all that long from john finding out about his lumen to being able to destroy Sarah camera with his telekinesis. It was meant to be more than 2 months in book but it only seemed like a few chapters.
Overall this book is written well and is an amazing read and I would suggest to anyone who is looking for a new book series to get into then this is the book for you.
Anyway I have been Aaron Morrsi and ill see you next time.
