Wall and Piece by Banksy Review

So for my birthday my best friend got me a few books that she knew I would like, and one of these where Wall and Piece by Banksy. He is an street artist that I have a lot of respect for because he doesn’t just write his name, he makes pieces of art that actually makes you think about the world.

The Story

Artistic genius, political activist, painter and decorator, mythic legend or notorious graffiti artist? The work of Banksy is unmistakable, except maybe when it’s squatting in the Tate or New York’s Metropolitan Museum. Banksy is responsible for decorating the streets, walls, bridges and zoos of towns and cites throughout the world.

Witty and subversive, his stencils show monkeys with weapons of mass destruction, policeman with smiley faces, rats with drills and umbrellas. If you look hard enough you’ll find your own. His statements, incitements, ironies and epigrams are by turns intelligent and cheeky comments on everything from the monarchy and capitalism to the war in Iraq and farm animals.

His identity remains unknown, but his work is prolific. Here’s the best of his work in a fully illustrated colour volume – including brand material.

Taken From Goodreads

This book is mainly a picture book which shows all the different types of work that Banksy has done over the years. But every now and then there is a description that helps explain why he has created a specific piece of art, or what his inspiration is for when he started to create something. For me this is great because it allows you to think about what is actually behind some of his work and makes you appreciate it even more. I have liked Banksy for about 2 years now and have looked at a lot of his art, but even I was surprised with how much more there is that I didn’t know about.

It is after reading this book that it made me want to get a piece of art by banksy tattooed on me because some of his work is just amazing and I have fallen in love with one piece in particular and it is probably one of his more popular pieces (picture below – it is also the cover of the book).

Overall this book will give you some insight on why Banksy doesn’t draw and make ‘real works of art’ and instead spray paints on walls. It will show you all the art he has created, some of which will take you all over the world such as in America and Israel. The pictures are great quality and so are the pages that they are printed on. For me this is a great quick read but is a book you keep around because of the pictures, it makes you want to keep going through it again and again to see some of the work he has done.
