Skulduggery Pleasant by Derek Landy Review

So again I am starting a new series, I have read this series before in my own time. In fact I have read it quite a few times as I know it is a series I enjoy, so after re reading the first book it is time for a review.

The Story

Stephanie’s uncle Gordon is a writer of horror fiction. But when he dies and leaves her his estate, Stephanie learns that while he may have written horror, it certainly wasn’t fiction. Pursued by evil forces intent on recovering a mysterious key, Stephanie finds help from an unusual source – the wisecracking skeleton of a dead wizard.

My Opinion

I have recently been going through my kindle library and adding more books from past series I have already read but not reviewed so I am able to get more reviews out for you guys and after using a randomizer to find out which book I should read first and Skulduggery winning I got right into the book and found myself loving my kindle all over again.

This is book that revolves around magic and how it is everywhere we look but as we aren’t magic ourselves we don’t know what it is. This would have been the case of Stephanie if her uncle hadn’t been killed and she meet a living skeleton. The story in this book is great, it has enough fast paced action every 30 pages or so where we following Skulduggery and Stephanie as they try and make sure that the world is still going to be around the next day. Its great as we get to see the development that Stephanie makes as she slowly becomes Valkyrie Cain. I don’t think I have read about a better partnership in a books since Percy and Annabeth, they just seem to complement each other so well, skulduggery making sure that any trouble that Valkyrie causes is stopped and Valkyrie putting up with all the random stuff that skulduggery does and says.

Skulduggery is the main reason I like this book so much mainly because he doesn’t take a single thing seriously unless he has to which reminds me a lot of myself. If there is a serious situation happening, then most likely skulduggery is going to come out with some remark that will actually make you smile while reading the book. It doesn’t take long for you to be able to see just how much skulduggery starts to care about Valkyrie even though at the beginning he tries he best not to because he knows that while she is weak while she is in training people who are against skulduggery will try and get to her to make him mad. It has happened before and he is going to try his hardest to make sure it doesn’t happen again.

Even though the book may only be 400 pages long the character progression is amazing, Stephanie goes from being scared as someone is trying to kill her while she is alone to being able to fight with someone who is probably the most powerful man in the world at the point obviously she is still scared doing it but uses her brain to make sure she can overcome it.

I loved every second while reading this as even though I knew what was going to happen at what points I still found myself excited for what was about to happen. It just shows that even though in my own opinon the demon road trilogy isn’t amazing derek landy has written some amazing books and the skulduggery pleasant series shows that and I cant wait to finish the rest of the series again.
