VVVVVV (PC) Review

This is a game I have owned for quite some time but it is only recently I have dedicated any time to actually playing it. Now that I have and somehow managed to complete two games in a month (this has become a rarity at this point) it is time for a review.

The story behind VVVVVV is that you are currently in a new dimension when your ship breaks and all of your crew mates have been blasted into different areas and it is up to you as the captain to get your team back and find a way to save the dimension and get back to your own. The story plays a very minimal part in this game which is something I don’t really like. This is only because I play games for the story so to finish this game when a story isn’t really present was a bit disappointing especially when I am playing multiple other games.

VVVVVV is a platformer, and dear god if it is not one of the best platformers I have ever played. Everything that you would want in a platformer is here, a slow increase of how hard the game is going to get. Gives you new ways to solve puzzles that require you to actually get good at the game to be able to beat instead of pure luck and finally being able to have a player be addicted from the start is always fantastic. When I say platformer don’t expect this to be anything like Mario but instead think something more along the Fez in space line. But like a lot of platformers this game requires you to time your jumps to perfection otherwise you are going to be hitting the spikes a lot.

The music is another good point of this game, the music is all futuristic but with a little addition of it sounding like it is coming from a commodore 64, which seeing how the game look a lot like a game that comes from that area it is not at all surprising. Yes if you do get stuck on a level then you are going to get sick of the music very quickly, I did this numerous times but when you do beat the level and are able to get onto the next one hearing the new music so refreshing and makes you want to keep on playing the game.

I really like the way this game looks, it has a really old style of pixel art which is just amazing to me, it gives the feeling of futuristic being mixed with retro which is my favourite style.

Overall for me I found this game to be very fun with the addition of being very challenging. This is one of the hardest games I have played for a few months now and it was nice to finally finish the game as it made me feel like I had accomplished something. For the price being £3.99 then I say go and get it as even though you probably wont be playing this game for too long it is a game I think everyone should play at some point in their lives.
